Haney Wants Thurman At 147 Following The Prograis Fight

Devin Haney is targeting a fight with Keith Thurman at welterweight should he get past Regis Prograis.

That is according to Bill Haney. Haney faces a huge test in taking on Prograis for his first fight at 140 on December 9th, 2023. This was after moving up from lightweight. Prograis’ WBC belt is on the line, as a win would make Haney a two-division champion.

But in order to do so, Haney must overcome a fighter who has only lost to Josh Taylor, the former undisputed junior welterweight champion. Meanwhile, Prograis’ record speaks for itself in that he has stopped 24 fighters out of his 30 fights. And yet, the aim was to move up to 147 with another title.

Haney Vs. Thurman

“If he wins, he has the opportunity to knock on the door of the 147-lb division. If Mr., what’s his name ain’t talking right and just sending them goons and goblins in December like it’s Halloween. Let’s save boxing one fight at a time.

“It was cooling off, and Devin decided he might put his pinkie toe in and see what it is against a hell of a competitor, a hell of a champion, a future Hall of Famer in Keith Thurman. Some people would say that’s a mountain too tall to climb. I reserve the right to invite Mr. Thurman out to watch on December 9th. With no disrespect to Mr. Thurman, who is a future Hall of Famer and wonderful talent,” Bill Haney said

Thurman would be a good introduction to the welterweight division since he is a former unified welterweight champion. And with only one loss on his record at the hands of Manny Pacquiao, a win would be a major name on his resume. That could then set up a legitimate shot at a world title at 147, given that the belts are likely to be freed up from Terence Crawford.

Haney’s Goals

The former is expected to move up in weight after having become the first undisputed welterweight champion of the four-belt era with a win over Errol Spence Jr. Bud had already been stripped of his IBF belt for failing to defend against Jaron Ennis even if he was contractually bound to face Spence after the latter exercised his rematch clause. And based on what Haney has said previously, a crack at the 147 division is a clear goal following the Prograis fight.

“People said Floyd [Mayweather] couldn’t punch, and he’s arguably the best ever. 135 was hard for me to make, and once I let my body fill out, I gained even more weight than I anticipated. 147 is definitely in the near future, but we’re right here at 140. I want to take over this division, and 147 is definitely next.

“I think all around the board, I’m getting faster, better, stronger because my body has fuel in it. I was depleting myself so much, making the weight. “I thought I was fast, and I thought I was strong, but now that I’m seeing that my body has everything that it needs, I feel stronger and faster. All around the board, I’m a better fighter,” Haney stated
