Garcia Blasts Spence For Betraying Derrick James - 'You Don’t Want To Pay Him, What's Wrong With You?'

Ryan Garcia slammed Errol Spence after he decided to split from Derrick James.

Spence parted ways after getting knocked out by Terence Crawford in a one-sided fight. It was the first loss of Spence’s career as he missed out on the chance to become the first Undisputed Welterweight Champion of the four-belt era. After the loss, Spence activated his rematch clause with the aim of avenging the loss.

However, the rematch never happened as Spence later underwent cataract surgery on his right eye. The Truth is now targeting a fight with Sebastian Fundora, the current WBO and WBC Junior Middleweight Champion. Before that can happen, Spence must find himself a new trainer. Reports indicated the pair parted ways over financial disputes, with James allegedly not being paid enough for his services.

Garcia On Spence

“He ain’t with Derrick James. You fought, you don’t want to pay him some money….It’s all business but still… I pay him more on a fight I make less. Come on…He has been with you your whole career. [What’s] wrong with you,” Garcia said

Spence has stayed silent on the matter as he continues to be linked with new trainers. Gervonta Davis’ trainer, Calvin Ford, has spoken about his interest in training Spence. Ford was open to the idea since Davis and Spence are known for being close friends. Davis did back Spence to stop Crawford as he mocked Bud’s supposed ‘glass chin.’ Robert Garcia also put his name into the hate. Garcia’s style may suit Spence since the trainer has worked with Marcos Maidana, who was known for being an aggressive come-forward fighter.

Spence’s Future

“If he reached out to me, I would definitely consider speaking and talking to him. I would love to because those are challenges for me, too. Look at Marcos Maidana. He had the best paydays of his life when he came to me. Sometimes fighters need something like that [to come to a Mexican boxing gym]. Maybe Spence needs something like that. He already has a great style. He was pound-for-pound, one of the best fighters in the world. It’s just little touches. Honestly, it would be a challenge for me too. I wouldn’t mind. It would be a good challenge for me. I would love to talk to him to put something together, why not?” Robert Garcia said

Since their split, James has spoken on the matter, showing that he is no longer on good terms with Spence. However, he had no ill will towards the fighter, as he wanted him to avenge his loss to Crawford, provided he was fully healthy.

“I’m focused on my other guys. We talked three weeks ago. You can’t look back. You can’t look forward and look back at the same time. Mentally, I guess he’s OK. I believe when you [participate in your biggest fight and lose], when the song stops playing, you’ve gotta dance or start putting that chair up. If he’s healthy and everything’s good with him, he can keep doing what he’s doing. If you’re gonna fight, [the rematch]is the fight to fight. Finish that deal out,” James stated
