Calvin Ford Anticipates Haney Vs. Taylor Clash At 147

Calvin Ford, Gervonta Davis’ trainer, seems to have ruled out a fight with Devin Haney moving forward.

The news comes after the Dream dominated Regis Prograis to become a two-weight world champion, picking up his WBC belt at 140. The manner of the performance was impressive since Haney answered many questions about his ability at the weight class that had emerged before the fight.

There was doubt about whether Haney could take a punch at 140. And facing Prograis allowed him to answer that since Regis had 24 KOs in his 29 wins. In addition, Haney also showed that his power could translate at 140 as he dropped Prograis in the third round with a straight right hand.

In the aftermath of that fight, team Haney accused Davis’ camp of not wanting to take the fight. That was also accompanied by suggestions that Haney could move up to 147 if the proper fight came along. And Ford expects that to happen in a bout against Josh Taylor.

Ford On Haney

“Y’all going up to 147. Talking about who you’re going to fight at 147. Forget about 140, forget about 135, and forget about Tank. They said it in the ring, ‘We’re going up to 147.’  I said, ‘Damn, who are they going to fight at 147?’ The only top dogs at 147 is Crawford and [Jaron] Boots [Ennis]. Thurman. I know you’re not going to jump up there, or you might fight [Mario] Barrios. Then I looked across the border, and I seen Josh Taylor. That’s who they’re going to go at. It’s easy to make,” Ford said

A fight against Taylor would be a pragmatic move. Haney has just moved to 140, so a fight against a top dog at 147 would be risky. Meanwhile, Taylor has confirmed that he will move up from junior welterweight to 147. Therefore, a Haney-Taylor fight could serve as a good introduction to the 147 division.

Taylor has also been a former undisputed champion like Haney. Meanwhile, Taylor has also fought Teofimo Lopez, a fighter with whom Haney has been linked. At the same time, Ford questioned the brilliance of Haney’s win over Regis Prograis.

Ford On Prograis

Despite acknowledging that Haney had done well, he questioned the quality that Prograis brought to the table. Ford highlighted how Haney struggles against fighters who can close the distance and dish out punishment just like Vasiliy Lomachenko had done. But when it came to Prograis, that was not the case.

“Regis didn’t have nothing for him, though. I was like, ‘Damn! How did he get where he got at? Is it that easy to get there?’ That was tailor-made for him [Haney]. Guys that gave him that fight back, he had problems with. When they picked him [Prograis] they already knew what he was bringing to the table. He just really showed y’all just now. If you looked at his previous fights, he never showed you anything different,” Ford
