In today’s boxing news, Mikey Garcia has reacted to the recent rumours linking him with an exhibition fight against Floyd Mayweather.

Reports had indicated that Garcia could come out of retirement to face Mayweather after having walked away from the sport in 2021 after a loss to Sandor Martin.

The four-division world champion retired at the age of 33, indicating a desire to pursue other ventures outside of the sport. Since his retirement, Garcia has developed an extensive real estate portfolio as well as a car collection.

Therefore, the news of a Mayweather bout did take fans aback. The bout would have been the final bout of Showtime’s participation in boxing this year after the news that they were walking away from the sport.

And given that Mayweather is known for fighting non-professional boxers since his retirement, Garcia was seen as a risk. However, Garcia’s uncle (Robert Garcia) shut down those rumours which has now been reaffirmed by Mikey.

Garcia On Mayweather Rumors

“I said, ‘Mikey, are you serious about this?’ When the rumors about him and Mayweather, right away, I screenshotted it, and I sent it to Mikey, and I said, ‘Mikey, is that true?’ and Mikey said, ‘Nope, there’s no chance at all. I’m just doing it to stay in shape and not gain too much weight.’ So, that’s where we’re at right now.  If something changes. I’m pretty sure we’ll be the first ones to know,” Robert Garcia

“I don’t know how people start rumors like that. Like I said, I’m just here to work out a little bit. I was getting a little lazy, and I wanted to come back to the gym and lose a little bit of weight and get in shape and have some time for some of the younger fighters and teach them something and motivate them a little bit.

“To get the likes, get the hits, and get the clicks. I wonder who started it. I think I know who the first one that I saw online. I don’t know him personally. I think he interpreted you and I speaking here a week ago after my training. He gives his opinion, and then somebody else here’s him, and they take it another step. It’s like telephoning,” Garcia said

Garcia Praises Mayweather

Despite this being the case, Mikey was open to the possibility of facing Mayweather. The boxer talked up the undefeated fighter, showing his desire to have one last bout.

But the chances of that appear slim even with Garcia’s Mexican fanbase since it has only been two years since the boxer walked away from the sport. And yet, that did not prevent Garcia from making his call out.

“Hit me up. From my understanding and my experience and boxing knowledge, I think he’s the best I’ve ever seen. I have a lot of respect for him and admire him a lot for the way he fought and the dominant performances he’s had over great fighters. You got to respect the guy, but as far as a fight, I haven’t heard anything from anybody in their camp,” Garcia
