De La Hoya Questions Devin Haney's Star Power - 'Nobody Is Going To Forget That Beating'

Oscar De La Hoya has said Devin Haney is not a big star, questioning his star power.

Haney’s loss to Ryan Gacia was overturned into a no-contest after Garcia received a one-year ban for Ostarine. But Haney is not happy, complaining that Golden Boy has not paid him. This was concerning after Garcia was required to pay Golden Boy $1.1 million from his purse after getting suspended while Haney was still waiting.

De La Hoya suggested Haney is not marketable. Meanwhile, he told Haney to audit his company to prove he pays all his fighters. While Garcia’s suspension has drawn a line under the sand, De La Hoya was unhappy that Garcia got a tougher punishment than Canelo Alvarez and Shane Mosely, who tested positive, showing the inconsistencies with different commissions.

De La Hoya Reacts

“Alright, guys, everybody talked about Ryan Garcia. Now, it’s Pappy’s turn. First of all, I don’t condone PEDs whatsoever, period. But let’s talk about the inconsistencies, the penalties, and the millions of dollars. I do not understand it. We should have a commission that oversees everything in every state because Canelo Alvarez gets popped in a different state and gets six months. Shane Mosley gets popped and gets zero.

“So, you’re telling me Ryan Garcia gets a year and millions of dollars? Let’s talk about Devin Haney now. Devin Haney, you’re pathetic. You’re dancing around at a bowling alley because you got your decision reversed.  Nobody is going to forget that beating you took. Oh, and let’s not forget. You’re accusing me of not paying you. Bro, you just do not sell. That’s the bottom line. You can audit my company anytime you want. I pay every fighter, and I’m pretty sure you got that from Canelo from what he started,” De La Hoya said

Those claims must be examined in light of Haney’s prior PPV sales before the Garcia fight. He faced Regis Prograis in a world title fight last December, his first fight at 140 pounds. Haney had just beaten Vasiliy Lomachenko in his biggest win at 135 pounds to retain his Undisputed Lightweight Title. While that may be the case, the PPV sales for the Prograis fight did poorly.

Haney Stated

Initial reports indicated that it only sold 50,000 PPV fights. This was despite the fight taking place in Haney’s hometown of the Bay Area. That suggested that Haney needed the right dancing partner to earn the big sums. The fight with Garcia allegedly made over 500,000 PPV sales. This was after Garcia had made over 1.2 million PPV sales for the Gervonta Davis fight. A large part of this was due to Garcia’s mass crossover appeal. For Haney, Garcia was pushing most of the promotion. However, Bill Haney was not pleased with De La Hoya.

“We’re looking [at which direction to go], but we hear Oscar De La Hoya say something about we don’t sell. The last time I checked, I don’t know how many arenas. When we looked at the Barclays [in Brooklyn, New York], there were a lot of brothers up in there. There were a lot of people that look like us that was up in there that came out to support. We did the Bay Area [San Francisco, California] and Las Vegas, Australia.

“So, that narrative [by De La Hoya], coming out, saying that we don’t sell. That’s some…[rubbish] Do you know what I mean? Any of the narratives that are pushing fake narratives are only pushing boxing back but not forwards, but we’re here to stay. If I knew the move that Dev was going to do next, it wouldn’t be my job to announce it,” Haney stated
