De La Hoya Ridicules Hearn’s Boxing Skills – ‘Oscar In One Round’
Oscar De La Hoya has trolled Eddie Hearn’s boxing skills, mocking the Matchroom Boxing promoter for hitting the pads.
De La Hoya and Hearn have not had the best relationship. It began to fall apart when Hearn entered the US market with DAZN. The move was seen as a threat to Golden Boy, one of the country’s biggest promoters. Things were also not helped when DAZN and Matchroom managed to sign Canelo Alvarez, who was once with Golden Boy.
However, relations did improve a little when DAZN became a network for Matchroom and Golden Boy. There was an incentive for both promoters to work together to put on the biggest fights for their platform. This was shown in the Devin Haney vs Ryan Garcia fight. Hearn managed Haney’s interests as the Brit backed his fighter to beat Garcia. Ryan was represented by Golden Boy, who got the better end of the deal, as Garcia came out victorious. Following the win, De La Hoya mocked Hearn after suggestions Haney wanted a rematch.
De La Hoya vs Hearn
De La Hoya: “Good luck with Eddie but there will not be a rematch. Good luck in your career and good luck with Eddie a European promoter trying to make it in the US.”
Hearn: “The road is long. This young man will be back stronger than ever! @RealDevinHaney.”
De La Hoya: “You obviously never laced up the gloves. Just like Don King and the rest. You don’t know what it’s like to fight inside a ring. Guess what? I do, and that beating will last for a while.”
The feud has gotten more personal, with De La Hoya ridiculing Hearn’s boxing skills. The promoter has taken a keen interest in his health, which has now translated into hitting the pads. The following footage shows Hearn dressed in a blue boxer’s robe. He hits the pads with the following combination: jab, uppercut, left hook, and right hand. While Hearn does have some respectable skills, De La Hoya was not impressed by what he had seen.
De La Hoya’s Mindset
De La Hoya’s antics contradict the words that were coming out of his mouth before the Haney fight. The promoter spoke about the importance of bringing together promoters. PBC has been criticized for only doing fights in-house, preventing fighters from their dream matchups. A stand-off with Hearn does nothing to improve those relations, especially if Matchroom and Golden Boy share a platform. Given Hearn’s close relationship with the Saudis now that DAZN is a global broadcaster for their fights, it is in De La Hoya’s interest to keep Hearn on his side.
“The sharing of fights, as we’ve seen lately with ESPN and DAZN, makes it that much easier. There should be no barriers, particularly with us on the same network. I do feel in boxing now with the opening up of the platforms it is easier to make fights. But it’s all down to personal relationships. When there is peace, I think it’s good for the sport,” Hearn stated
“Platforms have to come together, promoters have to come together, fighters are willing to fight each other,” said the Hall of Famer. “That’s the message we send as promoters. Fighters are willing to fight each other, let’s just come together and make this happen,” De La Hoya
