Bill Haney Wants A Lifetime Ban For Ryan Garcia – ‘He Was Cheating And Betting’
Bill Haney has called on Ryan Garcia to be banned from boxing.
Garcia’s win over Devin Haney has been heavily criticized following his failed VADA tests for Ostarine. The urine samples collected on April 19 and April 20 came back for the banned substance. Ostarine is banned because it allows users to burn fat and increase muscle and stamina. The B-sample also returned positive, ruling out the possibility of contamination from the lab.
Garcia claims he is innocent, as his team are getting all supplements tested. Garcia’s team submitted a hair follicle test, which came back negative, to show there was no long-term usage of PEDs. This is what Canelo Alvarez did when he tested positive for Clenbuterol. However, there are claims that the hair follicle test, in this case, is not indicative of anything since Ostarine/SARMs are not the same as Clenbuterol. Therefore, the same hair test cannot be applied to all types of PEDs.
Haney has already instructed his attorney to ask the New York State Athletic Commission to disqualify Garcia. This is with the intention of giving Haney the win. If that happens in some form, Garcia could get a ban and see the result overturned. Bill Haney wants decisive action.
Haney Reacts
“He says he loves steroids, and he takes steroids, and he’s taking Ostarine. There’s nothing you can do with this guy but get him out of the sport. I feel undermined to sign up to do this and for him to make a mockery of the sport. Ryan violated every known rule of conduct. He said he bet on the fight, but openly knowing he was cheating. So, he was cheating and betting. He shouldn’t have had the Ostarine in his system at all, and he did,” Bill Haney stated
Even if Garcia is banned, there is the question of how long such a suspension would be. Ryan is a big-name player in the sport, drawing a lot of attention to it and producing a lot of money. Canelo only received a six-month ban, which did not hinder his career. Most boxers aim to fight twice a year, meaning a six-month ban is enough time to rest and then go through another camp without disruption.
The boxing authorities could respond by imposing a big ban. But if they do that, it risks turning away some fans if there is not a consistent standard. Conor Benn’s failed VADA test for Clomiphene showed the dangers of what can happen when decisive action is not taken.
Garcia’s Future
Since failing his VADA tests in 2022, Benn has been going through the legal process without proving his innocence. He is currently banned by UKAD and the BBBofC from fighting in the UK. Until he clears up the situation, his career will continue to stall. Garcia will want to avoid doing the same. But his comments suggest he has plans for the sport.
“I don’t care if they ban me for my whole life because I’m going to just create my own league and do my own fights. I’m not going to walk away from boxing. I’m going to walk away from this boxing, create my own league, and fight on my own…[terms],” Garcia stated
