Warren Defends Fury's Controversial Post-Fight Comments Towards Usyk - ' He Is Bipolar'

Frank Warren has defended Tyson Fury’s behavior following his loss to Oleksandr Usyk

The Gypsy King lost a split decision as Usyk became the Undisputed Heavyweight Champion. The Ukrainian followed Lennox Lewis‘ footsteps, becoming the first undisputed champion in 25 years. The win made Usyk undisputed in a second weight class as he will go down as the best heavyweight of this era.

While that may be the case, Fury’s comments were not complimentary towards Usyk. He felt he had done enough to win the fight, saying ‘it was a daft’ decision in boxing. He also stated that the only reason Usyk was given the decision was because of the war in Ukraine.

Fury’s Comments

“First of all, I want to thank my lord and Saviour Jesus Christ for this fantastic fight with Oleksandr. I believe I won that fight. I believe he won a few of the rounds, but I won the majority of them. And I believe it was… what can you do, one of those fixed decisions in boxing. We both put on a good fight, the best we could do. And you know his country (Ukraine) is at war, so people are siding with the country at war. But make no mistake, I won that fight in my opinion. I will be back. I have a rematch clause,” Fury said

And yet, other Ukrainian fighters had suffered unfair decisions. Vasiliy Lomachenko lost a unanimous decision to Devin Haney despite the fact that most of the boxing community felt Loma had done enough to win. Lomachenko also did not respond by making any personal digs towards Haney, even if he was unhappy with the decision.

However, Warren defended his fighter. He outlined Fury’s problems with bipolar disorder. The condition can result in mood swings. Warren outlined how Fury initially congratulated Usyk before his comments, showing that he was complimentary towards his opponent.

But given the magnitude of the occasion and team Fury’s behavior in the build up, it did not come across well. John Fury had also headbutted a member of Usyk’s team during the build-up at fight week. That created a negative perception of Team Fury, forcing Warren to respond.

Warren Responds

“I get quite angry. I’ve just got back and I’m reading some of the reports. Tyson is bipolar. If you go on the NHS site and look at what the symptoms are of bipolar, some of the things is saying exactly what is on your mind. If it’s in your mind, you say it. That is one of the symptoms, unfortunately.

“Tyson, you look at him immediately after that fight, he kisses [Usyk] at least three times on the forehead and on the cheek. With Tyson, he’s said in the past, ‘I’ve retired’. And a couple of months later, ‘I’m fighting again’. That’s unfortunately one of the things that happens with people who suffer from a dreadful illness,” Warren said
