John Fury: AJ Must Beat Wilder To Face Fury
In today’s heavyweight boxing news, Anthony Joshua must overcome Deontay Wilder if he is to secure a fight with Tyson Fury.
That is according to John Fury. Joshua’s standing has fallen amongst the heavyweight elites following his back-to-back losses against Oleksandr Usyk.
The losses caused the Brit to lose his unified heavyweight titles, as he sought to rebuild his standing by hiring Derrick James. Since working with the American trainer, Joshua has managed to secure wins over Jermaine Franklin and Robert Helenius.
But the failure to win in style raised question marks over whether AJ was on the decline. Fights with Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder, although long been talked about, failed to get made.
The bout with Wilder collapsed after Skills Challenge Entertainment could not deliver it in Saudi. This was after the General Entertainment Authority became the main voice of boxing in Saudi.
Meanwhile, a fight with Fury could only happen if AJ were to overcome Wilder, according to the Gypsy Kings’ father, John Fury.
Fury On AJ
“The only way that can happen is if he beats Deontay Wilder. Everyone is skipping Wilder and no one wants to face him. I can’t stand him as a man, but every boxer on the planet is s*** scared of him except the Gypsy King, who’s beat him twice. If AJ wants to face Tyson, let him defeat Wilder. No one wants Wilder. They can’t take Wilder’s power.
“They’ve all got to face Wilder to get to ‘The Gypsy King’. If they think they’re going to tread low and then get paid multi millions when they don’t deserve it… at the end of the day, [Joshua] had an easy ride getting the belts. Let him earn his stripes to get to the Gypsy King. They’re going to have to line up and do something big. Tyson went to everyone’s back yard to get them titles. If Joshua beats Wilder, that fight can be made in 30 seconds. If AJ is good enough, let him beat Wilder and that makes this fight mega big,” Fury said
Those comments do have some credence given that Joshua is clearly the underdog in the bout. However, a win over Wilder would put both fighters on the same playing field as the two men to have beaten the Bronze Bomber.
Although that may be the case, the fight would still prove to be a lucrative success even if AJ did not beat Wilder. And given that it is a mega domestic clash, there would still be enough of a demand to see it happen. But for now, John Fury didn’t see it happening.
Reality
“But at the moment it’s dead in the water because he doesn’t deserve it. He can’t face a few bums and face the Gypsy King, can he? I know the public want to see it but let him earn it,” John Fury
Ultimately, Fury does hold the cards when it comes to the heavyweight division. So if the fighter wants the bout, there will be enough of a demand to make it happen.
