Teofimo Lopez Claims A Gervonta Davis ‘Fight Won’t Happen’

In the latest boxing news today, Teofimo Lopez has ruled out the possibility of a fight with Gervonta Davis moving forward.

The ‘Takeover’ is the current WBO junior welterweight champion, having beaten Josh Taylor via a unanimous decision to secure the belt.

Thereafter, the talk turned toward Lopez’s next opponent after the latter confirmed that the aim was to fight for nine-figure paydays. Ryan Garcia was mentioned as a possible opponent alongside Gervonta Davis.

The latter duo had shown their pulling power when they faced each other in a bout that sold over a reported $1.2 million pay-per-views and a gate which exceeded $20 million to become the highest-grossing fight of 2023.

And in doing so, Garcia picked up a reported $30 million. Therefore, the narrative was in place for Lopez to face Davis provided that terms could be agreed. And yet, it appears that a fight won’t be happening anytime soon due to Davis’ camp.

Lopez On Davis

“The reason why the Gervonta Davis fight won’t happen is obviously they have their plan of what they’re going to do with Tank. It works; good system. He doesn’t have to go above the B level; he doesn’t have to go below the B level. He stays right there,” Lopez

Those words were backed up by Paulie Malignaggi as the names being linked with Davis are opponents that the boxer has already managed to overcome.

A rematch with Isaac Cruz and Ryan Garcia has been mentioned. Meanwhile, a super fight against Shakur Stevenson is off the table despite the fighter arguably being the toughest test at 135 pounds.

And the longer Davis avoids the big names, the more difficult it appears for the boxer to get the respect from the boxing community.

Malignaggi On Davis

“You talk about Gervonta fighting B & C-level fighters and avoiding the A-level fighters. I agree. They [PBC & Mayweather Promotions] have a plan for him being a star, beating B & C-level fighters, and they’re not going to fight you. I don’t expect him [Tank Davis] to fight you, and I don’t expect Devin Haney to fight you.

“They’re on their plan. What I’m saying is they’re on their plan, but it’s not on the sport’s plan. The sport as a whole has guys coming behind us that also need to make money. We need the sport to thrive to keep making money, but everybody else is just about themselves. I don’t see these guys coming to see you to realistically make a fight,” Paulie Malignaggi stated

With Davis entering the peak of his career, the calls on the boxer to face the biggest names will only increase. And ultimately it may come to a question of whether currency or legacy takes precedence.

Regardless of what the case may be, Davis has shown a willingness to do things that favor his career financially. And there is no getting away from that. But will it be enough to pacify the fan base?
