WBA Welterweight Champion Rolando Romero has talked up a fight with WBC Welterweight Champion Devin Haney (33-0, 15 KOs, 1 NC), claiming an offer has been sent for a 147-pound title clash on May 30.

Romero entered the welterweight conversation last May, scoring an upset unanimous decision over Ryan Garcia at Times Square to secure the WBA (Regular) title. He was later elevated to full champion in August. While Romero has been linked with Manny Pacquiao and faces a pending WBA mandatory against the undefeated Shakhram Giyasov, he appears focused on Haney. Meanwhile, Haney secured the WBO strap with a dominant unanimous decision over Brian Norman Jr. in November 2025. Now, there are talks going on over a fight.

Verbals

Romero: “He likes to sue people when he loses. But I’d knock him out cold. Let’s make it happen.”

Haney: “We could’ve made this fight months ago, now u desperate..”

Romero: “Oh now that I called your bluff, you wanna run away? So much for the big tough guy act. Sign the contract.”

Romero: “You say sign the contract more than anyone in boxing. Stop acting like anyone is ducking you. My manager reached out to your dad. Sign the contract.”

Haney: F** u & ur manager! U made up all these reasons not to fight me so now stand on it! Go find that mandatory.”

Romero: “Y’all just got the call. May 30th, New York City at the Barclays on Amazon Prime. Ball’s in your court, Ducky.”

The Approach

Against Romero, expect Haney to double and triple the jab to disrupt Rolly’s timing. In his co-main event performance against Jose Ramirez in May 2025, Haney showed extreme discipline, refusing to be drawn into a brawl. In this upcoming fight, Haney will likely use his superior footwork to stay off the ropes, keeping Romero at the end of long-range counters. His goal will be a “shutout” performance—winning rounds with surgical precision and frustrating Romero into making reckless mistakes.

To beat Haney, Romero will likely employ the same patient aggression he showed against Garcia. He won that fight by landing a double left hook in the second round and then outworking a fading Garcia down the stretch. Against a technician like Haney, Romero cannot afford to hunt for a single knockout shot. He must use his physical size to bully Haney in the clinches and target the body to slow Haney’s lateral movement.
