Brown Rejects Opetaia Shot, Plans Three-Fight Path

Pat Brown has no interest in rushing into a world title shot. The newly crowned British cruiserweight champion stopped John Hedges in six rounds at Manchester's Co-op Live Arena on Saturday, then promptly told reporters he wanted more seasoning before facing Ring champion Jai Opetaia.

Ring Magazine mapped out a three-fight blueprint that could position the 26-year-old for world-title contention by late 2027. The hypothetical slate starts with a March clash against Aloys Junior, a powerful Londoner with one loss in 13 fights, followed by a July test against Canadian brawler Ryan Rozicki, who pushed Chris Billam-Smith through seven brutal rounds in June. Brown would close the year in December against former European titlist Jack Massey, who nearly upset Cheavon Clarke before getting stopped in the seventh of their June war.

Why Brown Turned Down Opetaia

Promoter Eddie Hearn floated the Opetaia fight immediately after Brown's stoppage of the previously unbeaten Hedges, but Brown made clear he has little appetite for a premature leap. The timeline gives him 12 months to sharpen his skill set while the current champions add mileage to their own clocks. Opetaia stopped Massey in six rounds last October, providing a direct measuring stick should Brown face the Derbyshire veteran in December.

A bout with Rozicki would force Brown to solve problems in real time. The 31-year-old Canadian walks toward trouble rather than away from it, and his 20 knockouts in 21 wins suggest he can crack. Brown has shown he can bully opponents and pace himself through adversity. A win over Rozicki would give him a shared opponent with Billam-Smith and clear the runway for a world-title bid before 2028.

Junior brings a contrasting style and personality. Ring noted that meaningful clashes between opposite characters have historically captured British fans, citing Eubank-Benn and Froch-Groves. Junior enters every fight loudly confident; Brown, per the report, "has made it abundantly clear that he has little time for fake hype and histrionics" but refuses to be dominated verbally or physically. The 23-year-old would bring athleticism and flair; Brown would counter with amateur pedigree and thudding power.

Brown defends the British strap for the first time in 2027. The Co-op Live Arena in Manchester will likely host at least two of the three fights, keeping him in front of a growing fan base while his team navigates the political and promotional hurdles Ring acknowledged exist in the domestic scene.
