Munguia And Ryder Make Weight Ahead Of Their Super Middleweight Clash

Jamie Munguia and John Ryder made weight ahead of their super middleweight clash on Saturday.

Munguia enters the fight as a heavy favorite, with an undefeated record of 42-0. That includes 33 wins by way of knockout. He has had two fights at super middleweight, with victories over Gonzalo Gaston Coria and Sergiy Derevyanchenko. A win over Ryder takes the Mexican one step closer to securing an all-Mexican clash with Canelo Alvarez if the David Benavidez fight fails.

Ryder will be full of confidence, having gone the distance with Canelo in his last fight. The Brit was in hostile territory, having faced Alvarez in his backyard. Despite losing a unanimous decision, he did trouble Canelo, landing his uppercut to keep the Mexican wary on occasion. He will have to do the same to get Munguia’s respect since the Mexican likes to come forward. Both fighters hit the scales at 167.8 pounds.

Pre-Fight Comments

“I honestly feel like I can knock John Ryder out. That’s what we are working toward,” Munguia

“I want to go in there and make a statement against Mungia. I’m here for a good time, not a long time. I’m a different fighter now from when I fought Canelo. I believe I learned a lot about myself. I wish I could have had that type of fight 10 years ago. You learn a lot about yourself, your desires, and how deep the fire burns. But, I am here now and the fire is still churning,” Ryder

“From the first day he came into the gym until now, he has worked hard. He gives 100 percent every day. He hits hard. [And] he definitely has good power … Sparring partners fear him. He loves to work,” Freddie Roach

“Freddie will get you in tip-top shape. If you thought Jaime Munguia was already in good shape in his previous fights, wait until you see his conditioning against Ryder. More importantly, I think the defense and jab output from Munguia is what I’m going to be looking for because of Freddie. I think Freddie is going to take him and push those limits. Freddie knows how important that jab is,” Oscar De La Hoya
