Jaime Munguia Says Canelo Reached Out Over A Fight – ‘They Called Us’
Jaime Munguia has revealed that talks are taking place for him to face Canelo Alvarez.
After reports that Alvarez will headline Amazon Prime Video’s PPV on May 4, 2024, the all-Mexican clash is being considered for Cinco De Mayo weekend. The news will disappoint boxing fans hoping to see Canelo take on David Benavidez. But with Alvarez having two fights left on his PBC deal, he still can face him on Mexican Independence Day. Now, talks have started with Munguia, as he confirmed Canelo’s team has initiated the contact.
Munguia On Canelo
“We started conversations. They called us. For me, it will be a real honor to be in the ring with Canelo, if that’s possible. I have never called him out or disrespected him. I want my position by fighting in the ring. And of course, we like the fight, but we’re not calling him out. I’m proving that I am deserving to be in the ring with anyone at 168 pounds,” Munguia said
It may not be the Benavidez fight, but it still provides a suitable Mexican clash for the occasion. Munguia is undefeated, with a record of 42-0. 33 of those wins have come by way of knockout. He has had two fights at 168 pounds, showing he is settled at the weight class.
His wins over Sergiy Derevyanchenko and Gonzalo Gaston Coria have put him in the conversation for the Alvarez fight. But before he can do that, he must overcome one of Canelo’s opponents, John Ryder, on January 27, 2024. He must do so to secure the Canelo fight. By the looks of it, he is prepared.
“I’m going to be prepared 100% and give the best from my side. With Freddie, it’s more aggressiveness. Now I am trying to combine both. I’m going to try and improve everything together. I don’t want to commit to any mistakes. Freddie is going to help a lot. I had a great training camp and am in good condition. [The transition has been] good. We’ve been very comfortable with Freddie. We’ve been training hard in Los Angeles without distractions,” Munguia added
Canelo’s Other Options
But if the fight does not happen, then Jermall Charlo is another name that has been mentioned. Before Alvarez faced Jermell Charlo, he had been linked with facing Jermall. The WBC Middleweight Champion was absent from the sport for over two years due to mental health struggles, meaning he was not prepared to face Alvarez.
The Mexican beat Jermell in a one-sided bout as Jermall took on Jose Benavidez Jr, securing the win. But since Jermall is not a 168-pounder like Jermell, that will receive more backlash. Juan Manuel Marquez wanted nothing but Canelo Vs. Benavidez.
“I do want to hear anything else. Benavidez has been waiting over a year and a half to be an official challenger. Please, tell us how long Benavidez has to wait for a world championship fight. Whether it’s Canelo or not, he must get that fight. I know it’s possible that Canelo says, ‘I don’t want to fight him.’ But we need to know what will happen if, at that moment, Canelo does not want to fight Benavidez,” Marquez said
