Eddie Hearn Wants To Sign Jaron Ennis

Eddie Hearn is seriously interested in singing Jaron Ennis.

The current IBF champion is one of the most exciting welterweights of this era. Boots became the full IBF champion after Terence Crawford was stripped for not defending his belts against Ennis, who was his mandatory. Bud was contractually bound to rematch Errol Spence Jr., as the defense did not happen.

While that was not the ideal way of becoming a champion, it has improved Ennis’ stock. The boxer is currently undefeated with a record of 31-0, with 28 wins coming via a knockout. Boots is still targeting a fight with Crawford, although it is likely that the latter will move up to 154 pounds or beyond. That would leave Ennis with the chance to unify. However, Hearn felt that the fighter was not being promoted appropriately since he should be a global star.

Hearn On Ennis

“He’s an incredible fighter but again, it’s getting him to understand, we’ve got a job to do with Jaron Ennis. I need 12 months to build this kid into a superstar. I need to take him home to Philadelphia and start selling out stadiums there. But when you’ve got a fighter as good as that, it’s so easy to put a plan together because you know he can beat everybody. When I’m selling a product that is elite and second to none, no one can do the job that I can,” Hearn said

Nevertheless, there is a stumbling block if Hearn does sign Ennis. Hearn does not have big-name welterweights under his stable. His most noticeable one is Conor Benn. The Brit is a small name outside of the UK, while at the same time, Benn has failed to win a world title. Meanwhile, the boxer still has to overcome his legal issues with VADA following his two failed tests for Clomiphene.

Ennis’ Future

That has prevented Benn from fighting in the UK, the only place where an Ennis fight would sell. In addition, if Hearn is short of welterweights, he would have to approach other stables to make a big fight. PBC is reluctant to do so with Matchroom, leaving Golden Boy and Top Rank as the main ones. But since Ennis is an avoided fighter, making those fights would be challenging. Nevertheless, Hearn is confident in his abilities.

“Who is pushing the profile of Boots Ennis? Who is getting on the microphone? I mean I’m pushing his profile just by talking about him.  He’s not even signed with us [but I’m talking about him] because I think he’s brilliant. …You need someone telling the world that this kid is special and that’s so easy to do with someone like Boots Ennis. He’s American, he looks great, he’s got style, he’s got power, he’s got speed, and I know you can put him in fights in 147, you just go, do your thing, so yeah,” Hearn stated
