Ryan Garcia Drinks 'Beer' Before Missing Weight

Ryan Garcia missed weight by 3.2 pounds for his fight with Devin Haney, drinking a ‘beer’ just before he hit the scales.

Garcia sought his first world title for Haney’s WBC Junior Welterweight Belt. Before the weigh-in, Haney had been taunting Garcia about whether he would make the 140-pound limit. At the final pre-fight presser, Garcia and Haney agreed to a $500,000 bet for every pound Garcia was over. Since Garcia weighed more than three pounds over the limit, he now owes Haney $1.5 million.

The results mean Garcia will not be allowed to compete for Haney’s WBC belt. Just before he weighed in, Garcia drank out of a beer bottle, showing he was not bothered by missing weight. Haney made the 140-pound limit, but the boxer appeared ‘drained’ despite his recent move to 140. Garcia later clarified that it was just apple juice and water.

Post Weigh-In

“The whole thing has been mental from the start, but just expect the unexpected tomorrow night. Something is going to go down tomorrow night. Maybe Ryan doesn’t leave the changing room. Maybe he comes out like a lunatic and hurts Devin. [And] Maybe he bites Devin. Maybe he leaves the room during the fight. Maybe he no mas’s on his stool.

“The last one is probably the likely scenario, but he’s going to be dangerous. All the attributes that he has [speed, power, size and killer instinct] are still in place. But I see a kid in pain, I’ve got to be honest with you. I don’t think the people around him are comfortable with his behavior,” said Hearn. “But you can’t just pull people out of a fight. Anything can happen tomorrow night. He might win. He’s crazy. That’s the reality of the situation. He’s come 3 1/2 lbs over in a world championship fight. Think about that. It ain’t good. It lacks professionalism,” Hearn said

Further Reaction

“I think he wanted to do that from the beginning. I don’t think he ever wanted to make weight. [And] I think he was training because he looked like he was in shape. One thing about Devin is he can box and he’ll fight you. So, I don’t see him beating Devin unless he catches Devin with a hook, knocks him down or knocks him out. But I don’t see him beating Devin. I think Devin will be moving up later on down the line. So, I see that being a big mega-fight, [Haney vs Ennis],” Bozy Ennis stated

“If anything, this should tell you that he’s not ready/ If this is a game, it’s to show the Haneys he’s not ready to get their energy to shift. It just looks like he hasn’t been handling it well. We do know dehydrating yourself plays a role on fight night. It could be just still a game,” Porter revealed

It still remains to be seen how much of this is Garcia trying to get into Haney’s head and how much is genuine concern over Garcia’s behavior.
