Canelo vs. Berlanga In The Works – ‘Puerto Rico vs. Mexico’
Edgar Berlanga is talking up a fight between him and Canelo Alvarez.
Alvarez secured a comfortable unanimous decision win over Jamie Munguia last weekend to retain his Undisputed Super Middleweight Title, giving his fellow Mexican the first career defeat. David Benavidez was ringside to watch the performance amid the increasing pressure on Canelo to fight him. Alvarez said he was open to that fight, provided the money was right.
However, Berlanga is ready to step in as his next opponent. Berlanga is 22-0 with 17 knockouts to his name. His last fight was a KO win over Padraig McCrory in the sixth round. But Canelo would be by far his biggest test. Berlanga hyped up a fight, sharing a make-up poster of him and Canelo, teasing about in September.
Canelo vs Berlanga
“Hopefully, we can run it in September, Puerto Rico vs. Mexico. I feel like that’s the biggest thing that can happen this year. That fight [Canelo vs. Berlanga] is going to go down in history for a long time in the sport of boxing. I’m a superstar from Puerto Rico, representing my island heavy [Correction: Berlanga was born in Brooklyn, New York].
“I just feel if I get this fight in September, I can become undisputed and be the first fighter to represent Puerto Rico for sure. We’re trying to see if we can land this Canelo fight in September. “We’re supposed to be in talks soon. I’m just going to lay back, get in the gym, start working, and get ready for that fight [against Canelo],” Berlanga said
That fight is unlikely to go down well with the boxing fanbase. Benavidez is seen as the biggest threat to Canelo’s reign. He has been the WBC Interim Super Middleweight Champion for over two years. However, the WBC has not enforced the mandatory one, nor has Canelo been stripped. Benavidez will now box Oleksandr Gvozdyk at 175 pounds on June 15.
Berlanga On Plant
A win makes him mandatory for the winner of Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol, who will fight for undisputed at 175. Benavidez has said he will only come back down to 168 for Canelo. But Canelo is the fight Berlanga wants, as he dismissed a bout with Caleb Plant. During the build-up for Canelo-Munguia, Berlanga and Plant had a heated altercation. That could have set up the narrative for a fight with Plant. But it appears Berlanga is focused on Canelo next.
“He started talking crazy. He’s not even Spanish. Why you here, bro?’ You got knocked out by Canelo, you got beat…up by Benavidez, and you want to be in a Mexican territory and Latino territory? You just looking for a come-up. You looking for clout right now,’ and he seen me and he knows what time it is and he wants to get a fight…You got knocked out by Canelo. You lost really bad to David. If you fight me,’ I’m going to going to end his career,” Berlanga stated
