Roy Jones Jr. Urges Crawford To Be Careful With Canelo, Wants Canelo To Rematch Bivol

In some recent boxing news, Roy Jones Jr. has warned Terence Crawford over rushing into a fight with Canelo Alvarez.

The comments arrived in the aftermath of Alvarez’s win over Jermell Charlo. The Mexican dominated the fight as Charlo struggled to register anything of note even though he did manage to go the distance.

In response, Crawford ruled out a fight against the American on the basis that he failed to show the credentials that suggested he would be a tough opponent.

That naturally opened the way for Crawford to tackle Alvarez at 168 pounds, something which he has spoken about doing. Although that may be the case, Jones warned Bud over rushing into the fight.

Jones On Crawford

“I think he’s a little big for Crawford. I’m not sure about that because Crawford does have punching power and is sharp, but I think Canelo showed tonight he’s pretty big,” Jones Jr. said

Those comments are understandable since Charlo admitted that the weight was an issue during the fight. That showed as the American failed to harm Alvarez even when he did land with his left hook.

That is why a gradual increase in the weight classes would make sense for Crawford. And yet, the chance to become  a three-division-undisputed champion at the age of 36 may be too much to turn down.

Despite that being the case, Alvarez has ruled out facing Crawford. The Mexican made the comments after beating Charlo, which suggested that his attention was on other fighters.

This may see fans finally get the chance to see Canelo face David Benavidez at some point in the future. Not only that, but if the fight with the Mexican Monster cannot be made, then Jones did suggest another option.

Jones On Canelo-Bivol

Jones urged Canelo to rematch Bivol. Canelo bounced back with a dominant performance against Charlo after recent question marks over his performances against GGG and John Ryder.

Following the fight, Alvarez indicated that he was ready to fight anyone. That has naturally raised questions over if he would rematch Bivol.

Prior to facing Charlo, the Mexican had attempted to rematch Bivol following his loss the first time around. Canelo lost via a unanimous decision at light heavyweight, which the Mexican wanted to avenge on the same terms.

Bivol, however, desired for the rematch to happen at 168 in order to fight for all of Canelo’s belts. Talks broke down as Canelo moved on to Charlo. Nevertheless, the calls for a rematch may now get renewed once again.

“He went up in weight to challenge himself. He went up as high as he could go to challenge himself [against WBA 175-lb champion Dmitry Bivol.] Once he realized that was his ceiling, he come back down, got back to form, and kept doing what he do. What’s wrong with that?

“Does that mean you lost a step? No, it don’t. He lost to a light heavyweight. No. At  168, yeah [ he should fight Bivol]. He looked good at 168. Not at 175. He should do it at 168 if he’s going to do it,” Jones Jr.
