Teofimo Lopez has verbally agreed to challenge Rolly Romero for the WBA welterweight title, though no contract has been finalized.

Lopez confirmed the news during an appearance on DAZN, per Bad Left Hook, saying legal teams are now working through the details. "We verbally agreed to it, and the rest is paperwork," he said.

The former two-division champion said going straight after a title at 147 pounds fits his approach. "I think, realistically, I wouldn't be known as 'The Takeover' without taking over the division," Lopez told DAZN. He added that he wants to face the best available opponents, including WBC titleholder Ryan Garcia and WBO champion Devin Haney.

Lopez, 28, is coming off a lopsided defeat to Shakur Stevenson in January. Romero has not fought since upsetting Garcia in May 2025.

Early rumors pointed to an August date for the bout, though that timeline could shift as contracts are negotiated.
