Prichard Colon Dies At 33 After Decade-Long Fight

Former welterweight prospect Prichard Colon has died at 33, nearly 11 years after suffering a traumatic brain injury that ended his career in the ring.

ESPN reports that Colon passed away this week, more than a decade removed from the October 2015 bout against Terrel Williams that left him in a vegetative state. The Puerto Rican fighter never regained full consciousness after collapsing in the locker room following that fight at EagleBank Arena in Fairfax, Virginia.

Brain Injury During 2015 Bout Ended Career

Colon was 16-0 with 13 knockouts when he faced Williams in a scheduled 10-round welterweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">super welterweight contest. He absorbed repeated blows to the back of the head during the fight, fouls that went largely unaddressed by referee Joe Cooper. Colon's corner pulled him out after the ninth round, and he collapsed minutes later backstage.

Doctors performed emergency surgery to relieve pressure on his brain, but the damage proved irreversible. Colon spent years under round-the-clock care from his family, primarily his mother Nieves, who documented his condition on social media and advocated for fighter safety reforms.

The case prompted renewed scrutiny of ringside medical protocols and led to regulatory changes in several jurisdictions. A civil suit against the ringside physicians and promoters was eventually dismissed, though the fight remains one of the most cited examples in ongoing debates over neurological protections in combat sports.
