Joshua's Driver Attempted Overtake Before Fatal Crash

The driver of a vehicle carrying Anthony Joshua attempted an overtake manoeuvre moments before a crash that killed two members of the boxer's training team, a Nigerian court heard this week.

Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, faces charges including causing death by dangerous driving and operating without a valid national licence, according to BBC News. He denies both counts. The December 2025 collision claimed the lives of Joshua's personal trainer Latif Ayodele and strength coach Sina Ghami as the group travelled to visit Joshua's father in Ogun State near Lagos.

What Witnesses Told The Court

Inspector Christopher Ajayi Taiwo of the Ogun State Motor Traffic Division testified that Kayode lost control of his Lexus SUV while overtaking a moving truck, causing it to collide with a stationary lorry. The group had been asleep at the time. By the time officers arrived, both vehicles had been removed from the scene, though debris and soya beans from the lorry's cargo remained scattered across the road. The only items recovered from the Lexus were a logbook, painkillers and an energy drink found near the driver's side, Ajayi said.

During cross-examination, Kayode's lawyer challenged the lack of a statement from Joshua himself. Ajayi told the court that "efforts are ongoing" but acknowledged he had not contacted the boxer because he "didn't have his number." A second defendant, lorry driver Abubakar Adamu, 35, denies obstructing the free flow of traffic.

Joshua posted a tribute to both men after the crash. "I didn't even realise how special they are," he wrote. "100% it's tough for me, but I know it's even tougher for their parents." The trial was adjourned until 10 September 2026.
