Canelo Maintains Saudi Fight Despite Embassy Evacuation
The U.S. Embassy in Saudi Arabia ordered all non-emergency personnel to evacuate just days before Canelo Alvarez's scheduled fight against Christian M'Bili in Riyadh, according to MMA Mania.
The embassy issued a critical security alert warning of hostilities against Saudi Arabia, including strikes on civilian airports and infrastructure that have caused casualties and travel disruptions. The official alert noted that Iranian-backed Houthi forces have targeted civilian airports and critical infrastructure, with potential for rapid escalation beyond the immediate area.
What The Evacuation Means For Canelo's Oct. 31 Fight
American citizens were advised to exercise extreme caution when using Saudi airports and to check flight status directly with airlines and airports. The alert specifically mentioned potential attacks on airports, airspace closures, and flight cancellations.
Despite the security concerns, the fight remains scheduled for Oct. 31 at Kingdom Arena in Riyadh. ESPN previously reported that Canelo and his team will use a private airport for travel to the event.
UFC CEO Dana White dismissed suggestions of rescheduling the promotion's December return to Saudi Arabia when asked about the security situation, per the MMA Mania report. The UFC is expected to proceed with its planned event in the kingdom despite the embassy's evacuation order.
