Aldo Backs McGregor For UFC Lightweight Title Run
Jose Aldo believes Conor McGregor can re-enter the UFC lightweight title picture when he returns from knee surgery next year.
Aldo, who lost to McGregor in 13 seconds at UFC 194 in 2015, told MMA Fighting that his former rival should drop back to 155 pounds rather than welterweight when he comes back. McGregor tore his ACL and meniscus in the opening seconds of his rematch with Max Holloway at UFC 327 in July and had surgery in August. He is targeting a summer 2027 return for what would be the final fight on his UFC contract.
Aldo Says McGregor Needs Dietary Reset For 155
The Brazilian said McGregor needs to go through "some dietary re-education" to get lighter again but insisted the Irishman has the frame to compete at lightweight. "I think, in my opinion, he has the frame for 155, so it would be good," Aldo said, per the report.
Aldo also argued that the lightweight division is open enough for McGregor to jump back into title contention with one signature win. "Today, if Conor fights at 155 and beats a name, the division is wide open again," he said. "To me, the division has kind of stalled there. Ilia [Topuria] moved up and lost to [Justin] Gaethje, so it's a bit of a mess there and anyone can come in and snatch the title."
Despite their contentious history — McGregor mocked Aldo relentlessly before knocking him out to end an 18-fight win streak — Aldo said he holds no ill will and hopes McGregor recovers fully. "I always hope for the best, so I hope that tomorrow he's doing well physically and psychologically," he said.
McGregor's final contracted UFC bout is expected to take place sometime between June and August 2027.
