Mayweather Backed To Beat McGregor In An MMA Rematch - Says Froch

Floyd Mayweather Jr. would beat Conor McGregor in an MMA bout.

That is according to Carl Froch. Their only meeting occurred in a boxing bout in 2017 when Mayweather came out victorious. McGregor lasted ten rounds before he was stopped. That took Mayweather’s record to 50-0. Since that defeat, Mayweather has been linked with the McGregor rematch. The Notorious has backed himself to get the better of Mayweather if they were to run things back.

While that may be the case, McGregor has not been in any fight since 2021. He suffered a defeat to Dustin Poirier at UFC 264, resulting in a broken leg. Although he is expected to fight again this year, his UFC return has not been confirmed, leaving McGregor with a potential boxing bout if he were to pursue it. But when it came to Mayweather-McGregor in MMA, Froch picked the boxer.

“I don’t think it’s as much of a mismatch as people think it is. I’m like, [McGregor’s got] two arms, two legs, the geezer is smaller than me. In my own mind, I don’t think it’s such a mismatch. When Conor McGregor fought Mayweather, it was a mismatch because McGregor could only use his hands, and he’s not a boxer. Mayweather is – a fantastic one, one of the best ever. If you put Mayweather in a cage, does that all of a sudden become a total mismatch and Conor McGregor takes him out? I’d say no.“I think Mayweather can sit behind his jab, still time him with a right hand and have a look at the feet,” Froch said

The closest an MMA fighter has come to beating a boxer in any form has been Francis Ngannou. He troubled the WBC Heavyweight Champion Tyson Fury, even if he lost a split decision. He dropped the heavyweight in the third round and managed to last the distance.

While he did not get the decision, many, including Froch, felt Ngannou had been robbed. But when it came to MMA, Froch even picked himself to beat McGregor in MMA. They were involved in a verbal exchange on social media, with Froch claiming he could get the better of the Irishman.

Froch On McGregor

“Conor McGregor might give me a few small problems, but he’s too small. I wouldn’t train much for either of them. If I’m fighting Conor McGregor in the cage, I’d train harder, because I’d fight Conor McGregor in the cage. I could be getting myself in trouble here or into a position I can’t wiggle out of, but I think I’d take him on in the cage. Is that ridiculous? … He’s too small,” Froch stated

McGregor’s next fight is likely to be against Michael Chandler. But if he does pursue a crossover boxing bout, then Froch could be an ideal candidate. However, it all depends on whether there is a demand to see it, mainly since McGregor focuses on returning to MMA.
