In some recent boxing news, Floyd Mayweather Jr. could be set for another exhibition bout on December 9th, 2023, live on Showtime pay-per-view.

According to reports, the boxer is reportedly in talks for an event that would also include Keith Thurman and Danny Garcia fighting in separate bouts on the card.

It is not exactly clear who those opponents would be, but according to Dan Rafael, the move is set to counter another big fight on the same day.

Regis Prograis is set to defend his WBC junior welterweight title on the same day, which would be a direct competition with DAZN’s pay-per-view service.

Mayweather’s Exhibition

“One of the things I heard while in Vegas for #CaneloCharlo is the possibility of a Showtime PPV on Dec. 9 at MGM Grand that would include a Floyd Mayweather exhibition as well as Danny Garcia and Keith Thurman in separate fights,” Dan Rafael said
The news also comes in light of recent comments that Showtime may withdraw from boxing in 2024. That did get the reaction of Eddie Hearn, who had long talked about how DAZN could see Showtime leave boxing since it was seen as an alternative to the traditional pay-per-view model.
And yet, 2023 has shown that Showtime is still putting on the biggest events in boxing with three fights that have generated a gate of over $20 million.

“This event on Saturday night will generate a gate of over $20 million. That’s a rare feat in combat sports. This will be the third time in the last six months that we’ve done a gate of $20 million. To put that in perspective, UFC has never done a gate of $20 million in its entire history. We’ve done it three times since April,” Espinoza said

Mayweather’s Criticism

And given that Mayweather does hold the pay-per-view record for the most number of pay-per-views sold, having him on a card in any capacity will naturally increase interest.

But whether that can generate huge numbers for an exhibition fight is anyone’s guess. After all, Mayweather has previously spoken about how the exhibitions are an attempt to grab more money without having to put himself through a gruelling fight.

But given that boxing fans have been putt off by not seeing the biggest fights, Mayweather’s following comments are not likely to resonate with the boxing fans.

“A lot of time people say, ‘Oh, Floyd have to do exhibitions. My philosophy is never stop getting it (money). Currency over legacy. Currency over legacy. Believe me, if I don’t ever do another exhibition in my life, I can live a great life,” Mayweather

Ultimately, Mayweather has shown that he is capable of garnering media attention regardless of whether it is positive. And since he is one of the greatest of all time, getting the chance to see Mayweather will always be appealing.

But will it be enough to get people to tune in on pay-per-view? Time will tell how it all plays out moving forward. Find all the latest boxing news and MMA breaking updates on boxingblitz.
