Liam Smith wants a trilogy fight with Chris Eubank Jr

The pair faced each other on two occasions, and Smith came out victorious the first time. He stopped Eubank in the fourth round, giving him the first stoppage defeat of his career. However, there was an element of controversy with suggestions that Smith used his elbow before landing the combinations which dropped him. There was also the asterisk of Eubank Jr. not being able to fight Conor Benn. He was initially training for the Benn fight, but Benn tested positive for Clomiphene, meaning the fight did not go ahead.

Eubank was also coming down to a career lowest at 157 pounds. That weight cut had a significant impact on him. The rematch then happened as Eubank Jr. did the reversal. He stopped Smith after teaming up with Terence Crawford’s trainer, Brian McIntyre, in their first fight. However, there were suggestions that Smith did not do the weight cut properly, as he ballooned up in between fights. In addition, he appeared to have suffered an ankle injury during the fight. There were grounds for a rematch, but it never happened, as Eubank Jr. will face Conor Benn next. But Smith still wants to gain his revenge as he felt he did not show his best during that bout.

Smith On Eubank

“Obviously, I will be keeping a very close eye on the big fight coming up in my division with Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn. But generally speaking, I’m very excited about what the future holds for me, especially with Eddie so closely involved with the Riyadh Season shows and some of the biggest events in the sport. I’m buzzing to be working with Eddie and Frank again. This is a big year. I can’t wait to get going with Matchroom,” Smith said

There was also talk of Smith potentially being linked with a fight against Kell Brook. Brook retired in 2022 after having beaten Amir Khan in his last fight. That was one of his biggest victories, even if Khan was at the tail-end of his career. Khan ultimately failed VADA tests for Ostarine in the aftermath. But Brook still took all the honors. He has since then been flirting with a comeback as bouts against Smith and Benn have been entertained. Smith may want the Eubank fight, but there is also a chance that Benn will come out on top.

Smith’s Future

If that were to happen, then there is also the possibility of Smith taking on Benn. It would potentially be more feasible for Benn to face Smith. Both men have boxed against 154 pounders. Smith has the opportunity to secure more big domestic fights now that he is at the latter end of his career. And with Matchroom and Queensbury working closer with the Saudis, there are more opportunities for him to do that.

“Welcome back, Beefy! We’ve worked together before, and we’ve always had a great relationship. Liam certainly needs no introduction. The desire inside him burns brighter than ever before. I’m looking forward to seeing him in some huge fights – live on the global home of boxing, DAZN – that will hopefully propel him towards his dream of becoming a world champion again,” Eddie Hearn
