Haney Says He Paid for His Own VADA Testing
Devin Haney's dispute with Ryan Garcia has now pulled in the WBC, and Haney spent Monday clarifying who his actual target is.
WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman questioned why Haney was involving the sanctioning body in what is fundamentally a personal feud with Garcia. Haney's response drew a distinction he felt should have been obvious — he was not attacking the WBC, he was describing how his testing results were submitted to them.
"My problems aren't with the WBC. This is knowledge to me that all my VADA testing were being uploaded to the WBC. In which all my VADA testing were being paid out of pocket by me to try to change the sport of boxing and make it much safer,” Haney
The claim that he has been voluntarily funding his own year-round VADA testing is the substantive part of the statement. Haney is arguing that he has gone beyond what individual fight contracts require, paying for continuous testing as a personal commitment to anti-doping standards rather than because a promoter or sanctioning body mandated it. He is presenting that record as the standard Garcia should be measured against.
"Ryan is running from the fact that VADA is the most stringent testing. Especially year-round testing,” Haney
Garcia has pushed back against that framing throughout the feud, insisting he has been enrolled in testing and producing recent results to demonstrate it. He threatened Haney with a cease-and-desist last week after growing visibly frustrated with the continued public accusations, accusing Haney of repeating claims he considers resolved.
Garcia's argument is that year-round testing he submits to voluntarily should demonstrate good faith. Haney's counter is that submitting to testing after a positive test, under heightened scrutiny, is not the same thing as the proactive, self-funded year-round testing he describes doing when nobody was forcing him to. The feud is not close to finished.
