Canelo Vs. Munguia Reportedly Set For Joint Broadcast On DAZN And Amazon Prime

Canelo Alvarez will reportedly fight Jaime Munguia on May 4 in a joint-broadcast deal with DAZN and Amazon Prime.

Reports stressed that Alvarez would face the undefeated Mexican, with an announcement expected next week. The only major stumbling block was the network in question. Canelo left PBC with two fights on his deal, only to restart talks with the promotional outfit.

PBC was keen on making the Munguia fight, but the Mexican fights with Golden Boy Promotions, which has a deal with DAZN. Now, it appears that a compromise might have been reached to allow both networks to work together.

The news is huge for Amazon Prime Video, which looked certain to losing its biggest star. It is unclear if this is just for one of Canelo’s fights or if he will now serve the remainder of his two fights with PBC. It may also allow a David Benavidez fight at some point in the future since the Mexican Monster is aligned with PBC. Benavidez ruled out leaving PBC to pursue the Canelo fight.

Canelo vs Munguia

“Canelo Alvarez and Jamie Munguia are finalizing a deal for a May 4 bout in Las Vegas for Alvarez’s undisputed super middleweight championship, sources told ESPN. It’s a one-fight deal for Alvarez and PBC after the sides split last week with two bouts remaining on a three-fight deal. Optimism Alvarez will continue to work with PBC moving forward, beginning with September return. Canelo-Munguia will be a Prime Video PPV and as @ChavaESPN reported, DAZN will also carry the event,” Mike Coppinger stated

Despite this, Oscar De La Hoya has remained coy over the rumours. If Canelo were to face Munguia on DAZN, the Mexican would have to put aside his bad relationship with the Golden Boy Promoter.

“I’m glad to go away from him. He’s f—king crazy. He’s a hypocrite. He doesn’t have any fighters left. Ryan Garcia is in a problem with him. Nobody wants to be with him because he’s not loyal. Right now he’s talking sh-t about me, but if I went with him it would be, ‘Oh he’s the best pound-for-pound,” Canelo revealed

De La Hoya On Munguia

Canelo left Golden Boy on bad terms, suing them for breach of contract in relation to his $365 million deal with DAZN over claims it was not honored. The lawsuit was settled with Canelo being released, but Alvarez has not spoken well of the promoter since then. When asked about a potential Canelo-Munguia fight, De La Hoya stated there was nothing new to report.

“There’s nothing I can say about that literally. I do know Canelo is fighting on Cinco de Mayo. Those are his dates. There’s been a lot of chatter about this fight [Canelo vs. Munguia], but right now, there’s zero news whatsoever. Canelo is the champion now and the man in boxing. I have to respect that and Cinco de Mayo and September until he’s finished, then somebody else will take over. That’s just the way it is. I’m pretty sure that when the fighters are ready to speak, they’ll speak,” De La Hoya stated
