Canelo Alvarez Vs. Jermell Charlo – What Does This Mean?

In a shocking turn of events, Canelo Alvarez has announced that he will be taking on Jermell Charlo on September 30th, 2023, in Las Vegas.

The news came as a surprise given that the initial reports had suggested that Canelo would have fought the other Charlo, Jarmall Charlo.

While that may have been the case, reports stressed that Jarmall would not be ready for such a bout.

This is on the grounds that the 160-pound WBC champion has been away from the sport for two years ever since he beat Juan Macias Montiel.

And yet, when it comes to Jermell, the undisputed champion at 154 lbs will have to deal with some major obstacles.

The star has never moved up in weight, so the fact that he has to move up two weight classes to make the fight happen is a huge risk.

After all, Canelo is the current undisputed middleweight champion. But that is not the only thing that will impact Jermell.

The latter had been linked with fighting Tim Tszyu who is the current WBO junior-middleweight mandatory. The pair had been scheduled to fight in January of this year.

However, the fight was called off after Charlo injured his hand. Attempts to reschedule the fight had been clouded since the injury took longer to heal.

And now that Charlo has signed the deal, there are doubts about whether the fight will happen in light of the prior comments of the Australian’s manager.

“I think we’ve gotten to the point now where it’s almost the date, and we’ve actually agreed on that [October]. It’s now just a timing issue now for their side to make the announcement more than anything, I think.

“They’re very confident that we’re going to move ahead with it. We’ve always been confident. I just think that guys like Jermell are champions for a reason.

“They hold the belts. I don’t think his character or his ego would not let this fight happen, to be honest,” Glen Jennings said.
