Benavidez: Morrell Tried To Injure Me

David Benavidez has accused David Morrell Jr. of trying to hurt him during their media workout.

The two boxers will do battle at light heavyweight on February 1. The build-up for the fight has already produced a lot of controversy. During their media workouts, Benavidez repeatedly said that he would break Morrell’s mouth. The pair have developed a bad blood recently, with both sides accusing each other of ducking. They ultimately took the fight after moving up from super middleweight once it became clear that the Canelo Alvarez fight would not happen. They have both boxed at 175 pounds for one fight and came out victorious. Benavidez defeated Oleksandr Gvozdyk to become the WBC Interim Light Heavyweight Champion.

Meanwhile, Morrell defeated Radivoje Kalajdzic to get the WBA interim title. The winner will put themselves in a great position to fight either Artur Beterbiev or Dmitry  Bivol, who face off in their rematch on February 22. The winner will become the Undisputed Light Heavyweight Champion, a title held by Beterbiev after he beat Bivol the first time around. Things escalated during the face-off.

Benavidez Reacts

The following clip shows Benavidez pushing Morrell Jr. backwards. The Cuban reacted by getting his belt and throwing it in the direction of Benavidez. Benavidez manages to get out of the way as security shuts down any chance of things escalating. Benavidez viewed that as a sign that Morrell was scared about the upcoming fight. The Mexican Monster felt that Morrell’s intentions were to try and hurt him so the fight could be called off.

“I really want to beat the [hell] out of Morrell, and that’s exactly what I intend on doing. For me, I already know he’s 100% scared of me because he’s already looking for ways out. Who throws belts at somebody’s face? That’s a heavy-[weighted] belt, bro. For me, throwing that belt at your face, I know in my mind that I’m going to hit you, and the fight is going to get canceled because you’re going to get cut. That’s exactly what he did. He aimed at my head, too. He didn’t try to miss,” said Benavidez said

The Fight

The two fighters are undefeated, setting up the narrative for a thrilling fight. They are also knockout artists, with either fighter capable of ending the bout inside the distance. Benavidez is 29-0, with 24 wins by way of knockout. But he failed to stop Gvozdyk in his last fight. But Benavidez said he suffered a hand injury during the fight. Morrell Jr. is also undefeated with an 11-0 record. He has nine wins by knockout. But he also failed to stop his last opponent, going the distance against Kalajdzic. But Benavidez and Morrell are both front-foot pressure fighters, meaning both are unlikely to sit back. That is what Benavidez expects.

“We’re going to go to war, and if he’s really about what he says, he’s going to stand there and go toe-to-toe with me. I don’t think he’s going to do it. I’m 100% ready to go in there and do it. I’m going to hurt that guy as much as I possibly can,” Benavidez stated
