Zepeda Suffers Injury As Shakur Could Face Kambosos

Shakur Stevenson will not be able to fight William Zepeda after the latter suffered a hand injury.

Shakur, who holds the WBC Lightweight Title, was expected to face Zepeda on February 22 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Zepeda is his WBC mandatory after having come off a win against Tevin Farmer in his last fight. Shakur was meant to face Joe Cordina this year, with the aim of then fighting Zepeda next year. However, Stevenson suffered a hand injury, which later required him to have surgery. Eddie Hearn expected him to be back early next year.

He outlined Zepeda as an immediate target, with reports indicating that Shakur had agreed a deal with the Saudis for a February 22 fight. The ball was now in Zepeda’s court about whether he wanted to take that bout. The Mexican indicated that he would like to face either Shakur or Gervonta Davis, stating that he was ready for whoever was put in front of him. But that has now taken a major setback after the news of Golden Boy President Eric Gomez saying Zepeda is injured. That will leave Shakur with a decision to make since the Cordina and Zepeda fights have now fallen through.

Shakur Vs. Zepeda

“No, Zepeda suffered an injury. So, he hurt his hand. We’re looking to reschedule that, but that’s the fight that Zepeda wants,” Gomez said

Shakur has responded by turning his attention towards a potential fight with George Kambosos Jr. Kambosos is the former Unified Lightweight Champion. He lost to Devin Haney on two occasions by unanimous decisions, missing out on the chance to become undisputed at 135 pounds. Since then, his form has never looked the same.

He struggled past Maxi Hughes, with many believing he had come out second best. He then suffered a loss against Vasiliy Lomachenko, losing the chance to pick up the vacant IBF Lightweight Title as he was stopped. But a Shakur fight allows him to win another world title and earn a bigger purse. Meanwhile, it keeps Shakur active with the aim of securing the biggest fights next year.

This is vital as he has yet to make his Matchroom debut. Before the injury, Kambosos encouraged Shakur to face Zepeda. But now they could face off against each other instead after an exchange on social media. Kambosos has also signed with Matchroom, making it easier to make the bout.

Shakur Vs. Kambosos

“I think so. I think they gotta fight. Why not? Zepeda is interim WBC champ. Shakur wants it, and he’s the full WBC world champion. The fans wanna see it. The crowd wanna see it. Why not? Why hide and try to go a different way and do this and do that? Do the Kambosos and fight the best fighters in the world. He’s done his way to the top, but, yeah, look: He’s gotta step up to the big names, and Zepeda is a good one for him next,” Kambosos said

“Come see me FEB in Australia the stage is already set drop your belt let Zepeda become email chump. And see me at 140. Contact your boyfriend first to make sure your knees are ok. Scared haha yea your terrifying on your knees with them buck tooth chompers. Much scarier than Teo, Haney and Loma….not you know exactly who to contact, I’m right here! Fr,” Kambosos stated
