Gervonta Warns Frank Martin In Their First Face-Off

Gervonta Davis and Frank Martin held their kick-off presser before their June 15 fight.

Davis headlines in his first fight since stopping Ryan Garcia last year via a seventh-round stoppage. His return to the ring had been delayed by legal issues. Tank was jailed for breaking the terms of his house arrest over a hit-and-run incident. He served 44 days in jail as he prepares to defend his WBA Lightweight Title.

Martin is an undefeated southpaw chasing his first world title. He is coming off a unanimous decision win over Artem Harutyunyan. But the fight was much closer than a clear decision, with Harutyunyan taking a knee against Martin in the final round, which was enough to win the decision. Davis brought up his sparring with Martin, showing his opponent the video. He also threw a slap in Martin’s direction.

In chief support, David Benavidez boxes Oleksandr Gvozdyk for the WBC Interim Light Heavyweight Belt. The Mexican Monster’s last fight was a stoppage win over former world champion Demetrius Andrade. Benavidez failed to get the Canelo Alvarez fight despite being his WBC mandatory.

Gvozdyk only has one defeat in his career against the undefeated Artur Beterbiev. Since that loss, he has won three on the bounce, beating Isaac Rodrigues in his last bout. The winner becomes mandatory for the winner of Beterbiev or Dmitry Bivol, who fight for the Undisputed Light Heavyweight Title. A Benavidez win would leave him with a decision to make.

The Mexican Monster must decide whether to pursue the mandatory position at 168 or 175. Both would offer the chance for undisputed, but the Canelo fight is much bigger. An all-Mexican clash gives Benavidez the chance to go down as one of the best of his era. Here are the key quotes from the presser.

Highlights

“I’m glad to be back in the ring. I’ve been off for a long time. I want to be flawless and do what I do best and that’s give you fans the best boxing you’ve seen up to date. He’s a frontrunner. I’m telling you, it’s a different beast in front of you…I’m telling you, it’s a different beast in front of him. Nobody that’s walking with him, holding him hand-in-hand is not going to be able to save him June 15th.

“I’m telling you. And it’s…a lot built up, and I’m going to take it out on him. Sorry it’s going to be him. “I’ve been watching everything. I know how [he walks]. I been watching everything. When we get in there I’m going to touch him up, I’m going to touch [him] up. I know how him and his whole team walk,” Davis

“I’ve been watching everything,” Martin said. “I know how his ass walk, I been watching everything. When we get in there I’m going to touch him up, I’m going to touch his ass up. I know how him and his whole team walk,” Martin
