Sunny Edwards Taunts Bam Rodriguez For Turning Up Late, Both Weigh 111.6 Pounds For IBF/WBO Flyweight Unification

Jesse Rodriguez and Sunny Edwards made weight ahead of their unified flyweight fight on December 16th, 2023.

Rodriguez arrives into the fight as the favorite as he puts his WBO belt on the line. He became the WBO champion after giving Cristian Gonzalez a unanimous decision defeat to take his record to 18-0. 11 of his wins were by stoppages, making him a dangerous customer for Edwards.

The Brit is the IBF champion, making the fifth defense of his title. He is also undefeated, with a record of 20-0. Four of his victories have been knockout, as Edwards relies on his defensive skills and ring IQ to get the job done.

But he will need to get Rodriguez to respect his power to prevent him from walking him down. Both boxers weighed in at 111.6 pounds. After they weighed in, Edwards became angry since Rodriguez arrived 30 minutes late. The fighter hit out at him and dropped his microphone before storming off.

Reaction

“Bam was a half an hour late, and Sunny went, ‘I ain’t waiting. I’m going,’ and then he said, ‘I’ll only come back when you send me a picture of Bam in the arena.’ Then the guy sent him a picture, and he had to come back from the hotel.

“We were 45 minutes late on the scale. They weighed in, they made weight, and we’re ready to fight tomorrow night. No more bull***, no more mind games. Just one of the best fights in boxing,” Eddie Hearn

“He was just letting me know that he didn’t want to be here, and I’m going to punch him up basically. I love fighting southpaws. I’ve had great southpaw sparring. If he switches, then I’ll switch. It doesn’t matter. I prefer the opposite stance. No matter what stance. I can do both, constantly swap. I’m going to beat him, I’m going to take his belt, and I ain’t surprised,” Edwards

In the co-main event, Murodjon Akhmadaliev and Kevin Gonzalez battle in a WBA super bantamweight title eliminator. The victory puts the winner in a position to fight either Marlon Tapales or Naoya Inoue as they prepare for an undisputed clash on December 26th, 2023. Akhmadaliev weighed 121.6 pounds, while Gonzalez weighed 121 pounds. Let us take a look at the full results.
