Paul And Tyson Walked Away Happy - Here's Why

Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson may have received much criticism, but both fighters will have walked away happy.

The fight took place on Netflix as the platform broadcasted its first-ever boxing fight. There were serious concerns before the fight that the age gap would make this unsafe. Paul entered the bout as a 27-year-old who had boxed three times since last December. His wins over Andre August, Ryan Bourland and Mike Perry suggested that he would simply overpower Tyson. The latter had not had a professional boxing fight since 2005, when he lost to Kevin McBride. His only foray into the boxing ring since then was against Roy Jones Jr. in 2020 when they had an exhibition.

Paul Vs. Tyson

Tyson arrived into the Paul fight as a 58 year old who had withdrawn from the initial July 20 date with an inflamed ulcer. It also later transpired after the fight that he had been wearing a compression sleeve on his knee to help deal with an injury. But the pair managed to get out of the fight in one piece. Tyson took a few shots, none of which did any extensive damage. Meanwhile, Paul also was caught by a few shots. But The Problem Child never looked like he was in any trouble.

The numbers showed that it was a success since 72,300 fans attended the AT&T Stadium. Only Canelo Alvarez vs. Billy Joe Saunders did more at 73,126. The card also set a record for the highest gate outside of Las Vegas, which went over $17.8 million. The fight was also tuned in by 60 million viewers, whilst it was available to its wider Netflix subscriber base of 280 million. The two fighters reportedly earned huge amounts of money, too.

Paul earned $40 million, whilst Tyson earned $20 million. That is also without any additional sponsorship deals that they may have negotiated, as well as any future opportunities that arise. Tyson admitted in his post-fight comments that he would be open to fighting again, even calling out Logan Paul. Logan Paul’s fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. resulted in the latter getting $100 million. A fight with Tyson could also generate big numbers.

Wider Impact

The co-main event was also a success since Katie Taylor’s rematch with Amanda Serrano was considered one of the best fights this year. The fight drew up a lot of controversy, given that the scorecards were in favor of Taylor in a unanimous decision. But the fight was close, as it could have gone either way, even if Serrano outlanded Taylor according to CompuBox.

Paul also solidified his position in the boxing game, showing that he is now one of the cash cows of the sport. He was repeatedly calling out Canelo Alvarez before his fight. But in his post-fight comments, he made it clear that he does not need Canelo. He suggested that the Mexican needs him if he wants a big payday. That increased profile will help those associated with MVP Promotions, too.

Paul also enabled Indian boxer Neeraj Goyat to make history. Neeraj beat Whindersson Nunes in a unanimous decision in their six-round super middleweight clash. There are even suggestions that he could fight Paul next. The following video clip shows them verbally agreeing to fight. Paul is making a major shift in the boxing game. While he may not fight the biggest names, he is ultimately drawing in huge crowds and earning big dollars.
