Wilkens Mathieu channels Kelly Pavlik in Falcao stoppage

Aaron Clarke
Lightweight & Featherweight Writer ·

Wilkens Mathieu stayed unbeaten with an eighth-round stoppage of Esquiva Falcao on Thursday in Quebec City that recalled Kelly Pavlik's legendary finish of Jermain Taylor nearly two decades ago.

The 21-year-old middleweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">super middleweight, now 16-0 with 11 knockouts, had to work for it against the 36-year-old Brazilian Olympic silver medalist, per Bad Left Hook. Falcao came to compete and landed solid stretches through the first seven rounds, testing Mathieu's composure and defense. But during one of Falcao's better sequences, Mathieu landed a shot that buckled his opponent's legs. Mathieu spotted the opening and swarmed to finish, stalking Falcao along the ropes in a sequence that mirrored Pavlik's 2007 rally against Taylor.

Mathieu's upside separates him from Quebec pack

"You can see the legitimate potential in Mathieu to be a real world-level fighter, and without meaning to be disrespectful, you just don't see that in most of the Quebec headliners," Bad Left Hook's Scott Christ wrote. The comparison to Pavlik-Taylor ends at the visual — Mathieu entered as the clear favorite, not the underdog pulling off a shock — but the finish itself carried the same stalking precision.

Mathieu's ascent to headliner status at 21 reflects both his talent and Quebec's deep boxing scene. The Falcao fight gave him live rounds against a credentialed veteran who forced him to adjust mid-bout, the kind of experience that separates prospects from contenders. Mathieu weathered Falcao's best work and closed the show when the moment arrived.

Mathieu has built real momentum in a regional market that produces consistent action but rarely world-level threats. His next opponent and date have not been announced.
