Volkanovski Willing To Fight Gaethje

Alexander Volkanovski has not closed the door on a third run at the lightweight title — he has just made clear he is not the one pushing it open.

The featherweight champion addressed the possibility of a fight with newly crowned lightweight champion Justin Gaethje in a manner consistent with how he has always handled the two-division conversation — measured, self-aware, and careful not to overreach before the moment is earned.

"I'm not going to call for it. That's the type of champion I am. I think you need to earn it, but if the UFC wants to offer it? Of course. See two 38-year-old fellas go at it in the lightweight division. 100 percent. Of course I would. Arman should be next," Volkanovski

The acknowledgment that Tsarukyan deserves the first shot is notable. Volkanovski is not positioning himself ahead of a mandatory contender — he is signalling availability without campaign, a distinction that reflects the lesson he drew from his previous lightweight pursuits against Islam Makhachev.

He lost both of those attempts before returning to featherweight and reclaiming his title with a dominant victory over Diego Lopes at UFC 325 in January. The experience appears to have refined rather than extinguished his appetite for the challenge.

What Volkanovski is really doing is keeping his name attached to the lightweight picture without the kind of public lobbying that would undermine his stated values around earning opportunities. He lost to Makhachev twice. He came back and rebuilt.

Gaethje, meanwhile, is 38 years old, serving a 180-day medical suspension, and openly considering retirement after the most significant victory of his career. Whether there is a Gaethje fight to chase, and whether Tsarukyan does not simply claim the belt before Volkanovski's window arrives, are the variables that sit outside his control.
