Tyson Fury contract allows fight abroad, but Hearn says Zuffa blocked
Tyson Fury's contract to fight Anthony Joshua does not require the bout to take place in the United Kingdom, according to BoxingScene, though Joshua's agreement contains the opposite stipulation and explicitly bars Zuffa Boxing from any promotional role.
Joshua promoter Eddie Hearn told reporters in Arizona that while Fury's deal with Saudi financier Turki Alalshikh leaves venue flexibility, Joshua's contract mandates the fight occur exclusively on British soil. "I don't know what [Fury] says about the venue," Hearn said, per BoxingScene. "I just know what ours says: That, exclusively, the fight must take place in the U.K."
Hearn confirms Zuffa Boxing excluded from promotion
Both contracts name Hearn and Frank Warren as promoters of record and explicitly exclude Dana White and Zuffa Boxing from involvement, according to Hearn. White claimed last week he would promote the fight and hinted it might land outside Britain, with boxing officials telling BoxingScene that Los Angeles' SoFi Stadium has been floated as a possibility. Hearn said Alalshikh, who owns 60 percent of Zuffa Boxing, could theoretically move the event to another country but would need to renegotiate Joshua's existing deal first.
"Specifically in the contract it says Dana White, Zuffa cannot have any promotional involvement in the show," Hearn said. "Dana doesn't know about the contract for the show that we signed and negotiated." He added that Zuffa has been struggling with its boxing product and is attempting to attach itself to the superfight's momentum.
Hearn spoke at the weigh-in for Jesse Rodriguez's bantamweight title defence against Antonio Vargas, which takes place Saturday at Desert Diamond Arena. The Joshua-Fury bout is expected to follow tune-up fights scheduled for July and August.
