Tony Bellew Considering A Shock Return

Tony Bellew has expressed an interest in making a comeback to the sport at the age of 40.

The former WBC cruiserweight champion, Bellew, has called out the current WBC bridgerweight champion Lukasz Rozanski in an attempt to become a two-weight-world champion.

The Brit had retired from the sport five years ago as he lost to Oleksandr Usyk. However, he did have victories over David Haye and was a world champion when he beat Makabu.

It is not exactly clear if Bellew is seriously entertaining the idea, given that he is a member of the boxing media community. He is a key member of DAZN, as Bellew’s transition post his boxing career has been seamless.

Although that may be the case, the man in the know, Bellew, has since then doubled down on his beliefs.

"It’s not a spat, it’s someone I think I could beat. I’m not going to lie, I’m 40 years of age and I don’t know. Getting ready for ‘Creed 3’ last year I got in really good shape and ended up seeing a set of abs that I hadn’t seen in the best part of a decade and I thought ‘why not?’

"To be totally honest, I couldn’t make cruiserweight again safely and I’m straight up to the point, but I could make bridgerweight nice and comfortable and if I’m being honest, I think I’d absolutely pulverize him," Bellew

Bellew is no stranger to the limelight since his retirement from the sport. In the aftermath of the recent Anthony Joshua vs Jermaine Franklin fight, Bellew got himself involved in an altercation that he would rather have done without.

After the 12-round battle, Joshua and Franklin had to be physically separated as emotions ran high. The intensity of the match led to this altercation.

Moreover, there were reports of Tony Bellew getting into a fight with a member of Franklin’s team at ringside, which added to the chaos.

"You can’t have a trainer going for a boxer.vSo, I said ‘Hey lad what are you playing at?’ And he’s said something, and I’ve said ‘F*** it, let’s do it then. I’ll f***ing meet you with a right hand.

"I didn’t want the trouble with him, but I just said, ‘What are you doing?’ And he went ‘What are you going to do?’ I said, ‘What the f*** are you going to do?’

"So, I’ve stepped down like ‘Let’s go!’ I stepped aside so I thought he was going to step to me and a right hand was going to meet him but he didn’t get close enough.

"What do you want me to do? I was just trying to tell the man that you can’t approach a fighter, you can’t do that. It’s down to the fighters and if Jermaine and [Anthony] are having a little tussle," Hearn

Whether Bellew returns or not is anyone’s guess. But if he were to make a comeback and become the oldest ever British world champion at 40, then that would be history in the making.

The Bridgerweight division may not be biggest, since it only came into being at the start of this year. Outside of that, Bellew could have a go at the heavyweight division, given the potential for a mega-domestic fight.

If that were not to happen, though, Bellew has established a legacy as a world champion with his WBC cruiserweight title. And there is no getting away from that. So watch this space moving forward.
