Floyd Mayweather faces theft charges over alleged bad check
Floyd Mayweather appeared in a Clark County, Nevada courtroom Monday through his attorney after a Las Vegas jeweler filed a criminal complaint alleging the retired champion wrote a bad check for $200,000. The purchase, a designer watch bought on Christmas 2024, has landed the Hall of Famer with theft and intent-to-defraud charges.
ESPN first reported the case details Monday. The 49-year-old, who retired from boxing with a 50-0 record, now faces accusations he knowingly passed a check without sufficient funds to cover the transaction.
Mayweather's mounting legal and financial troubles
The criminal complaint marks the latest financial trouble for a fighter once synonymous with nine-figure paydays. Mayweather earned hundreds of millions during his career but has faced multiple legal disputes in recent years over unpaid debts and business dealings.
The theft charge carries potential jail time if prosecutors prove Mayweather knew the check would bounce at the time of the transaction. Court records indicate his legal team entered the appearance on his behalf rather than Mayweather attending in person.
A preliminary hearing date has not yet been scheduled. The jeweler's identity remains undisclosed in available court filings.
