Sky Sports Documentary Reveals Boxer's Toughest Fight
Sky Sports News has released a documentary examining how fighters cope with retirement, featuring conversations with Lennox Lewis, Johnny Nelson, Dave Allen, Natasha Jonas, and promoter Eddie Hearn. The Final Round explores the psychological pull that keeps boxers returning to the ring and the challenges they face building lives beyond the sport.
Former cruiserweight champion Nelson described the sensation of fight night as euphoric. Lewis, the former heavyweight champion, pointed to the roar of the crowd as what he missed most. Allen, who fought primarily on British soil, said nothing else matched the buzz. "It's the ring walk that you miss," George Groves added, per the documentary. "Getting that energy that comes from the crowd. There'll be nothing else like it."
Why Fighters Struggle To Walk Away From Boxing
The documentary explores how ego drives comeback attempts even when a fighter's body signals decline. Nelson admitted he seriously considered returning nine years after retirement when Marco Huck equalled his record of consecutive title defences. Ricky Hatton, who returned in 2012 after three years away, told Sky Sports he did not regret the comeback because it confirmed he was finished. "We always think we've got one last go in us," he said.
Financial reality complicates the decision for most fighters. Robert Smith, general secretary of the British Boxing Board of Control, noted that boxing remains a relatively poor sport where most fighters hold other jobs. Sam Eggington, who announced his retirement during filming, said he started boxing after being made redundant because he needed to make money to live.
The piece also examines ongoing discussions around formal support systems, pensions, and fighters' unions — structures that exist in other sports but remain largely absent from boxing. The Final Round airs on Sky Sports News this week.
