Benavidez's Next Fight Is Close

David Benavidez is staying at cruiserweight, and his next world title fight is close to being official.

Reports indicate a showdown between Benavidez and WBC cruiserweight champion Noel Mikaelian is nearing a deal, with Benavidez's promoter confirming it is done on their end and awaiting Mikaelian's signature.

Benavidez made his cruiserweight debut in May, stopping unified champion Gilberto Ramirez. Benavidez stepped up in weight and looked better for it — more powerful, more comfortable, and fully in control of a fight against a unified title holder.

The initial expectation was that Benavidez might return to heavyweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">light heavyweight after the Ramirez win. That plan has been quietly set aside. Cruiserweight appears to be his home now, and the division's landscape offers plenty of compelling options.

The most discussed is Dmitry Bivol, the unified light heavyweight champion whose name keeps appearing alongside Benavidez's in conversations about potential big fights. That matchup remains possible but apparently not imminent. Jai Opetaia, the IBF cruiserweight champion who recently filed a lawsuit against the sanctioning body after being stripped of his title, represents another compelling option.

Mikaelian is a two-time WBC cruiserweight champion with a career that includes a third-round stoppage of Ilunga Makabu to win the belt in November 2023, a controversial points loss to Badou Jack in May 2025, and a rematch victory seven months later.

A win over Mikaelian in November would make him WBC cruiserweight champion, adding a title at 200 pounds to the legacy he built at 168. From there, a fight with Bivol or a unification with whoever holds the other major belts becomes the natural destination.
