Rakhmonov On Potential Makhachev Title Fight

Shavkat Rakhmonov thinks he can give Islam Makhachev problems if the two ever meet for the UFC welterweight title.

The undefeated contender has watched the 170-pound division move on without him while recovering from surgery that cost him a planned shot at then-champion Belal Muhammad. Makhachev eventually captured the belt from Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322 last November before defending against Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330 in Philadelphia.

Rakhmonov Breaks Down Stylistic Matchup With Makhachev

In an interview with ALF Global, Rakhmonov said he expects a competitive fight with the current champion. "I should be able to defend myself quite effectively," he told Alfredo Auditore, per BJPenn.com. "You, on the other hand, however, wrestle well, Islam. I'll do pretty well. I think my standup is better than Islam's. The fight will show."

Rakhmonov added that he views the matchup as a tough test for both fighters. "I truly believe that I am the toughest opponent for Islam right now, and he's also the toughest opponent for me, personally," he said.

Rakhmonov's team is pushing for a return in early 2027, with the assumption he'll face a top contender upon his comeback. Some observers believe the injuries may have cost him his window to become an all-time great, while others think he can still reach elite status with better health. How he looks after the layoff remains the biggest question mark.
