Pereira's UFC Future In Doubt
Alex Pereira is considering walking away from the sport.
Pereira admitted this week that fear and a sense of completion are both factors in his thinking as he contemplates his future following the controversial TKO defeat to Ciryl Gane at UFC Freedom 250.
"Honestly, I'm afraid to go back to fighting with all this going on. I think I've already done my part," Pereira
The case he is building around the result has consumed the weeks since the fight. Pereira accused Gane of landing illegal elbows to the back of his head during the finishing sequence and called for referee Herb Dean to face legal consequences for failing to act. Dean responded publicly with a detailed video explaining his interpretation of the rules and why he did not consider Gane's strikes illegal.
His legal team is now examining whether the outcome can be overturned or changed to a no-contest — an appeal that faces significant institutional resistance but one Pereira appears committed to pursuing regardless.
The broader picture is a man who came to the White House to make history, believed he was denied that opportunity by a refereeing failure, and is now sitting with the loss on his record while a legal process moves at the pace legal processes move.
Pereira is 13-4, a two-time UFC world champion, and one of the most decorated fighters of his generation. His heavyweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">light heavyweight title reigns, his middleweight championship, and the performances that built his reputation are not diminished by the Gane defeat regardless of the circumstances. The 180-day medical suspension removes the immediate pressure to decide.
