Costa Should Be Next Over Ankalaev, Says Analyst

Paulo Costa should challenge for the UFC heavyweight/" class="internal-link text-bone underline decoration-ash/30 hover:decoration-gold underline-offset-2">light heavyweight title before former champion Magomed Ankalaev, according to MMA analyst Kenny Florian.

Costa has won two straight fights since moving up to 205 pounds, most recently stopping Azamat Murzakanov. The Brazilian middleweight-turned-light heavyweight has rebuilt his profile with finishes that contrast sharply with Ankalaev's grinding style.

Why Costa Gets The Nod Over Ankalaev

"I would go with Paulo Costa," Florian said on his "Anik & Florian" podcast, per MMA Junkie. "This is exactly what the division needs. They need a name, they need excitement. I don't care about this division, I really don't. I want to, but I don't. And I need someone like a Paulo Costa who looks the part, who plays the part, who is hilarious on social media."

Florian acknowledged that Ankalaev has the stronger resume but said the UFC prioritizes fighters who draw attention. Costa brings star power and knockout threat that Ankalaev lacks, even after Ankalaev reclaimed the belt at UFC 327.

"Yes, I think Ankalaev probably deserves it based on what he has done, but we know that this is a business and the UFC is looking for guys that are going to go out there and put on a show, and Costa is that guy," Florian added.

Carlos Ulberg holds the belt after beating Ankalaev earlier this month. No timeline has been announced for Ulberg's first defense.
