Opetaia's Former Trainer Killed
A tragedy has struck close to Jai Opetaia's camp ahead of his upcoming world title fight.
Meehan was gunned down in a parking lot at a community center in the Punchbowl suburb, sustaining multiple gunshot wounds. Despite efforts from responding paramedics, he could not be saved and was declared dead at the scene. Authorities believe the shooting was a targeted attack and are looking into a possible link to outlaw motorcycle gang activity, though the investigation remains active with no arrests made so far.
The son of former WBO heavyweight title challenger Kali Meehan, Louis had spent years embedded in the family's boxing operation and shared a close bond with Opetaia that extended far beyond their professional connection.
"That's hard. I found out this morning. It's still fresh," Opetaia
The loss hasn't derailed Opetaia's plans in the ring. He's still slated to challenge WBC cruiserweight titleholder Noel Mikaelian this Saturday, September 12, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
