Makhachev Chooses Prates Over Morales For Next Title Shot
Islam Makhachev has made his preference clear for his next welterweight title challenger after Ian Garry.
The UFC champion told MMA Junkie that Carlos Prates deserves the shot over Michael Morales, citing the Ecuadorian's inactivity since his knockout win over Sean Brady last November at UFC 322. Prates, meanwhile, has stayed active and finished former champion Leon Edwards on that same card before stopping Jack Della Maddalena earlier this year.

Makhachev Questions Morales' Readiness For Title Fight
Makhachev is set to defend his welterweight strap against Garry at UFC 330 on Aug. 15 in Philadelphia, with Morales serving as the official backup despite his unbeaten 19-0 record. The champion questioned why Morales has been waiting on the sidelines rather than fighting top contenders. "He has to fight, bro," Makhachev said. "When he fight last time? He's waiting for the title fight or what? Too much contenders."
The Dagestani fighter suggested Morales should face either Prates or Shavkat Rakhmonov to establish himself as the clear number-one contender. He referred to Prates by the nickname "Nutella cake" after spotting the Brazilian eating the dessert during UFC 322 fight week, calling him an exciting matchup for his second title defense.

Makhachev defeated Della Maddalena by decision to claim the welterweight title at UFC 322, while Prates finished the same opponent via stoppage in their subsequent bout. The champion faces Garry first at Xfinity Mobile Arena next week.
