Teofimo Lopez has been confirmed as the super champion by the WBO at 140 pounds.

Lopez’s WBO Belt

The news arrives in the aftermath of his win over Josh Taylor via a unanimous decision to win the belt. In the aftermath, Lopez announced that he would retire from the sport.

However, since then, the boxer has reversed that decision as he seeks to target the biggest fights. And the title of super champion has now aided his cause in doing that.

Lopez’s Future

The move will allow Lopez to be given greater deadlines over when he has to defend his belt by way of mandatories. In addition, Lopez will be allowed to become an immediate mandatory if he does decide to move up or down in weight. Therefore, the resulting impact is access to bigger fights.

This begs the question: where could Lopez go next? Well, a move up to 147 could occur and fight for the belts if Terence Crawford vacates.

Although it is not clear if Teo would end up doing that, the resulting options have opened up the possibilities to create more history. After all, Lopez is a two-weight and two-time lineal champion.

Haney Vs. Prograis

Meanwhile, Devin Haney will face Regis Prograis on December 9th, 2023. Reports indicate that a deal has been reached for both fighters to face each other. This would be for Prograis’ WBC belt at 140 pounds, as a fight will take place in San Francisco, California, in front of Haney’s fans.

The fight had been a long-time coming after question marks emerged over whether it would go ahead. Prograis was very vocal about how he had already signed his side of the contract.

However, the failure by Haney to do so led to suggestions that the undisputed lightweight champion was looking to avoid the fight. So much so that Prograis even considered the idea of facing Adrian Broner.

A win for Haney would most likely rule out a return to 135, given that the American has won all the belts. Therefore, bouts with Shakur Stevenson and Gervonta Davis may have to wait until those fighters decide to move up to 140.

And with Prograis being 35, Haney has the chance to grab another title in another division to increase his pulling power.
