Chimaev Rules Out Two Opponents Due To Injuries

Khamzat Chimaev has scratched two potential opponents from his list after learning both are sidelined with injuries.

The newly crowned UFC middleweight champion told Red Corner MMA that a conversation with UFC chief business officer Hunter Campbell eliminated matchups with Caio Borralho and Dricus du Plessis, the former titleholder Chimaev defeated on the scorecards to claim the belt. Per MMA Junkie's coverage of the interview, Chimaev is targeting an October return and wants a quick turnaround.

Chimaev Eyes Strickland Or Imavov If October Plans Fall Through

"It doesn't matter to me. I call out everyone," Chimaev said. "I want to come back as soon as possible. Earlier, I said that I wanted to return in October, and I called Hunter (Campbell). They told me that Caio and (Dricus) Du Plessis are injured. We'll see what happens. I don't know exactly. Maybe Imavov and Strickland won't fight, and I'll be ready."

Speculation has linked Sean Strickland to a title defense against Nassourdine Imavov, though Chimaev appears willing to step in if that booking collapses. BJPenn.com noted that Chimaev initially seemed open to an immediate Strickland rematch before pivoting to other contenders.

One available name is No. 4-ranked Joe Pyfer, who recently questioned whether Chimaev handles pressure well. Pyfer faces Luke Rockhold at RAF 13 on Sept. 18, the same card where Chimaev rematches Gilbert Burns. No. 5-ranked Brendan Allen meets Christian Leroy Duncan on Oct. 10, leaving few clear-schedule options for a champion chasing a fast comeback.
