Makhachev Manager Shoots Down Prates Fight Rumors

Islam Makhachev's anticipated welterweight title defense against Carlos Prates is nowhere near official, according to the champion's management.

Rizvan Magomedov, who manages Makhachev, told Russian outlet Ushatayka that reports of an imminent matchup are premature. "As of now, it's not close to becoming a reality," Magomedov said, per BJPenn.com. "It's all just rumors and talk. Negotiations are ongoing, but confirming he'll fight on a certain date and against a certain opponent is still far from realistic."

What January UFC 336 Speculation Means For Makhachev

The welterweight champion defended his strap against Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330 in August and told reporters afterward he plans to fight again before Ramadan. That timeline pointed to January, with UFC 336 in Toronto on Jan. 30 emerging as the likeliest landing spot. Makhachev has said publicly he prefers Prates over rising contender Michael Morales, citing Morales' inactivity.

Prates has won three straight since dropping a decision to Garry in 2025, finishing former champions Leon Edwards and Jack Della Maddalena along with a knockout of Geoff Neal. The Brazilian's recent run moved him to the front of the 170-pound queue.

Magomedov's comments suggest fans should temper expectations about a locked date. Makhachev remains interested in clearing out the welterweight division despite UFC commentator Joe Rogan suggesting the pound-for-pound great might be nearing retirement.
