Khabib Reveals Gaethje Pushed Him Closest To Limit
Khabib Nurmagomedov has named Justin Gaethje as the fighter who tested him most during his unbeaten run in the UFC.
The retired lightweight champion, who finished his career 29-0, told reporters that Gaethje presented unique difficulties in their October 2020 title unification bout at UFC 254. Khabib submitted the interim champion in the second round but said the American's power and defensive wrestling pushed him harder than any previous opponent, per Sherdog.
Why Gaethje Stood Out Among Khabib's Opponents
Gaethje entered the fight with a reputation for devastating leg kicks and one-punch power, tools that forced Khabib to adjust his usual pressure-heavy approach. The Dagestani fighter controlled the bout but acknowledged the threat level throughout, particularly in the standup exchanges where Gaethje landed clean shots before the grappling took over.
The victory marked Khabib's final appearance in the Octagon. He announced his retirement immediately after, citing a promise to his mother following the death of his father and coach Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov earlier that year.
Gaethje has since fought twice, losing a title challenge to Charles Oliveira in 2021 and dropping a decision to Max Holloway at UFC 300.
